Pond Veggie Filter
I have used a veggie filter in my pond for many years and it’s always worked very well. Substantially cheaper than a commercial unit, much more attractive and being sited inside the pond makes it safer too. I once went on holiday for a week and when I came back, I found my external UV filter had sprung a leak and drained the pond!
This is a unit I made which looks after a 120cm Blagdon terrace pond. The pictures are from a second unit I made for a similer pond which I took apart due to moving house.
I started off with a self watering planter:

This has an insert which creates a space at the bottom for the water to enter.

Into this space, I drilled a hole for a hose attachement:

I then placed a pond plant pot into this. The ones from our local garden centre fitted exactly:

I then attached some tubing which feeds the unit with water from a pond pump:

The unit should then be positioned in the pond as it will be very heavy once filled with gravel.
Fill it with pea shingle and then plant fast growing pond plants directly into the shingle.
The water will be forced up through the shingle which will provide the filtration and the plants will thrive on the nutrients. The whole unit is effective, discrete and much cheaper than a bought unit.
